BackgroundThe Future Enterprise Architecture: a Fusion of Management Science and Engineering?
This workshop is the third in the series leading up to the main ICEIMT2010 conference. The ICEIMT movement started in the early 1990s as a collaboration of the US and the European Union to identify long term strategic research directions, obstacles and opportunities of Enterprise Integration (as the field was called at the time).
The first applications of Enterprise Integration (EI) / Enterprise Architecture (EA) mainly concentrated on the creation, transformation and management of information systems and the underlying information technology in the enterprise (sometimes coupled with the management and transformation of the material processing system), but the EI/EA paradigm (enterprise modelling and engineneering) has been slowly extending its coverage to traditional management areas.
At the same time, business management, business transformation, leadership and innovation – as exercised at the executive and business unit management levels – has been operating under a different paradigm, using various management theories and methods, to decide on and manage business development, investment, to adopt new business models, or to develop the organisation.
By the early XXIst century it became clear that these two sides are so intricately intertwined that to create real business agility and innovation the enterprise must be considered in its totality, as a multi-faceted system of evolving and hybrid (human – machine) systems.
Consequently a future unified theory of enterprise, associated methods and tools, and ensuing new practices would have to be based on results of both of these broad fields and those of their sub-disciplines, and be wide in scope to be applicable for the consideration of human, social, economic and technology aspects of enterprise.
Aims and scope
The aim of this workshop is to foster the exchange of ideas between management and engineering science to explore the synergies that could be used for creating a coherent framework for the future enterprise to achieve, or improve, agility, innovation, sustained economic performance, resilience and other desirable systemic properties.
The scope includes presentations of future directions of individual sub-disciplines as well as organised debates among leading thinkers / researchers from management, economics, engineering, systems science, enterprise arch itecture, information systems, ICT, industrial engineering and potentially other relevant disciplines.

· Future directions and challenges in
- management science and practice,
- enterprise architecture research and practice,
- systems science, systems engineering, ICT and complex systems;
· The economy as a complex enterprise
· Interdisciplinary synergies, frameworks that could organise management and engineering knowledge
· If a ‘grand unifying theory’ of enterprise were achievable, what would be the practical consequences of such a theory (and associated methods and tools) on management and engineering practice, and on the sub-disciplines themselves?
· Which communities should act on such a challenge?
· Candidate theories, frameworks and paradigms
· Collective intelligence and the intelligent enterprise: theories, models and implementation
· Management and the use of enterprise modelling
· Whole of life and complete life cycle approaches to enterprise engineering -- the systems science of EA and management
· Maturity models of enterprise architecture and of management; coordination and consistency in decision making
Workshop Format
The event follows the tradition of ICEMT workshops that precede the main ICEIMT conference. Papers may present individual research results, overviews of achievements of the area, and / or identify future research directions.
Paper presentations will be followed by discussions in break-out groups moderated by leading experts. Summaries of the discussions and debate will be reported back to participants at the Workshop and will also be included in the post proceedings. Main contributors of the debates will be invited to turn the outcomes of the workshop into full papers to be submitted to the main ICEIMT 2010 conference.
Paper submission and format
Option 1. Submit full paper before conference, or
Option 2. Submit extended abstract (max 2 pages) before the conference and
submit full paper after the conference

Papers should not exceed 15 pages (approx 7500 words including figures) in the
LNCS/LNBIP Format Proceedings and other Multi-author volumes.
In both cases (option 1 or option 2) full papers will be double blind refereed by at least three members of the International Program Committee.

Publication
Full papers will be blind refereed by three members of the International Program Committee. The volume will also include transcripts or summaries of discussions that took place at the conference.
Post Proceedings will appear as a volume of Springer Verlag’s Lecture Notes in Business Information Processing LNBIP (under negotiation). Attendees will receive electronic copies of the accepted papers and extended abstracts before the workshop.
